Behavioural questions such as "Tell me about a time you handled a conflict" are designed to understand how you work.
The STAR structure
- Situation – brief context
- Task – what you were responsible for
- Action – what you did (the longest part)
- Result – the outcome, ideally measurable, and what you learned
Prepare a story bank
Prepare six to eight stories covering leadership, conflict, failure, ambiguity, delivering under pressure and influencing others. Most questions can be answered with one of them.
Common mistakes
- Spending too long on the situation
- Saying "we" when the interviewer wants to know what you did
- Forgetting the result
